Veiled Woman With Spirit Child

Veiled Woman With Spirit Child
24" x 36"
Artist Roberta Baker

"I have an appreciation for the serenity and the sense of the divine that the universe gifts to us when we are open to their presence...I want to imbue my quilts with the feeling of tranquility and a sense of the sacred."

Techniques: "I have recently been using digital images in my work. I use my own photos of nature and masonry; a growing collection of trees, blossoms, water and skies, flights of stairs, walls, temples, sidewalks strewn with leaves, tiled doorways, marbled facades and chipped paint. I have also used photos of completed quilts, both full images and details, which I edit for color and size and then incorporate them into a new quilt."

Pacific Northwest Landscape

Jennifer Whitted
Three Dimensional
17" x 19"

The scene was created by layering painted felt with a layer of painted organza and adding cotton fabric that looks like rocks.

The edges were then heated and melted to create dimension and an interesting edge to the sides and top of the scene.

Another piece of painted felt lies along the bottom of the scene and has been heated to give it an appearance of mossy ground.

The scene is mounted on a piece of blue with purple and green accented Batik fabric.

The tree is created with painted threads, artificial stems and a piece of driftwood at the base.

There are other three dimensional elements of green artificial fern like pieces along the edges and another piece of actual driftwood affixed to the surface.

The piece has stitched thread work and is machine quilted.

The bottom edge has a curve cut for accent.

There is a hanging sleeve attached to the upper back side for a dowel and only requires one small nail to hang.

There is a signed and dated signature label by the artist attached to the back of the quilt.

Materials Used: Batik fabric, cotton fabric, felt, organza, silk florals, driftwood

The last piece I own from Susan Sorrell. She does incredible work. So vibrant. So tactile. You can easily get lost in the imagery, always discovering something new every time you look at it.

Underwater Landscape

Susan Sorrell
Fiber & Mixed Media
"Octopus Garden 6"
9" x 6"

Created using personal sketches and doodles, symbolic images, photos, image transfers, fabric pieces and painting. Then, layers them on top of each other after resizing them accordingly to the main fabric piece. She then embellishes them with applique pieces, beaded and thread embroidery stitches. All hand stitched.

Her pieces easily sell well into the hundreds and low thousand dollars.  She has been internationally published in Stampington Studio publications, as well as other publications, where her work has been a main focal point.

“When I draw ideas from my life, I create artwork…I like to use my life and what is happening in the world (from my perspective) as themes in my artwork.” – Susan Sorrell
